New Nissan Leaf to Enter Electric Car Market

Nissan Motor Company recently made an exciting announcement regarding its future automobile lineup. Their small four seat electric hatchback, unveiled as the Nissan Leaf, is set to hit the market in 2010 and become one of their standard production vehicles by 2012. Final prices for the vehicle have not been released, but expensive battery technology may cause the car to be rather pricey. Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn has stated that their hopes are to bring the price of the Leaf in line with other standard vehicles of similar size.

The Japanese automaker has high hopes for its entry into the electric vehicle market. Ghosn said that he believes fully electric automobiles will represent approximately 10% of the global fleet by 2020. Nissan executives have decided to make a very aggressive push into the electric vehicle market to show consumers their dedication to alternative technologies and promote a reduction of harmful emissions. The Leaf represents all of their hopes for the future of automobiles.

In addition to the ability to conserve fuel, the Leaf also provides a zero-emission alternative to the standard fossil fuel burning vehicles. When running solely from electric charge, the car itself will not emit any harmful substances into the environment. Nissan expects the car to reach a top speed of around 80 miles per hour and would have a range of approximately 100 miles per charge. This distance will meet the needs of nearly 80% of the world's commuters.

The Leaf utilizes technology very similar to that of the Chevrolet Volt. A standard plug adapter is used to charge the Leaf's lithium ion batteries while the vehicle is parked overnight. A typical charge may take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. The electric engine is the primary form of propulsion in the small hatchback. In addition to the electric motor technology, the Leaf will also have a gasoline combustion engine that will switch on to assist in the charging of the lithium ion batteries.

Regenerative braking also contributes to keeping the electric engine powered. With regenerative braking, energy from applying pressure on the brakes is captured and stored in the car's batteries. Just like a majority of hybrids and electric vehicles, the Leaf's engine will automatically shut off when the vehicle is stopped. This helps conserve energy and fuel that is typically wasted while idling.

With a look that appeals to a slightly different niche than the Volt, the Nissan Leaf should be a very successful entry into the electric auto market.

Special attractions The first indication that this van is a bit special comes when you turn the ignition key. Initially it appears that nothing has happened, but if you listen carefully, the faint hum of electric motors can be picked up and the gas motor is just about audible.

Select drive, release the brakes and away you whoosh, almost silently, under electric power. A digital display on the dashboard lets you know what's going on: power from the van's huge battery is turning the front wheels. Touch the accelerator and a second yellow arrow points from the display's virtual battery to the rear motor, doubling your power.

Depressing the throttle still further cuts out the yellow arrows, but an orange arrow to the front wheels appears in their place, indicating that the gas engine is now taking the load. Floor the pedal and the electric motors cut back in, providing the driver with all the power the machine can muster.

Fascinating-if not downright distracting-stuff, especially when the driver lifts off the throttle and the arrows reverse and turn green, showing that the van's forward momentum has turned the motors into dynamos, and the battery is now recharging, ready for the next stop-start. The upshot of this is not only that drivers spend less time watching the road ahead (bad thing), but that they end up trying to drive without using the gasoline engine as much as possible (good thing), resulting in smooth, highly economical journeys.

Transitions between gasoline and electric power would be all but undetectable without that display, and the Alphard's silky smooth ride is compounded by its continuously variable automatic transmission, which keeps the gasoline engine at an even speed, and therefore, engine note, at all road speeds. Altogether, the hybrid system is capable of pushing out over 170PS; 131 from the engine, 17 from the front motor and 25 at the rear, which is enough to provide surprisingly sprightly acceleration for very little effort and to keep the van humming along at 140km/h on the highways.

Another added bonus of all that electric power is the three 100V AC power outlets, one between the front seats, one facing the second row of passengers, and the third in the trunk ready to power camping and outdoor gear. Each can knock out a belting 1500W, enough to run a hair dryer, though the engine does need to be started first.

As with most three-row, eight-seater vans, all seats can be folded down to form a mammoth bed, and the center row slides backwards and forwards and spins, allowing the rear occupants to face each other. The rearmost row can also move fore and aft, or be folded out of the way, to increase luggage space.

Produced by Toyota in the United States and also in Australia, the Toyota Avalon is a full-size front wheel drive sedan with four doors that originally was based on the platform of the Toyota Camry. The first generation Toyota Avalon was introduced in 1994 as a 1995 model.

This original Toyota Avalon is currently still being produced and built in Australia and has been made to be a right hand drive for Australia, New Zealand, and some parts of Asia, and is also being made as a left hand drive for the Middle East. Five years after its introduction, a second generation model was then on line to be released.

The first generation Toyota Avalons lived from 1995 up until 1999. It was a completely new model that was built in the same plant as the Toyota Camry and became Toyota’s flagship. It was based on a stretch Toyota Camry platform and had 3.0 liter V6 engine that is quite capable of making 192 hp and 210 ft-lb. of torque. Minor updates were done after several years to its front and rear sides along with some updates in its power.

Come 2000 up until 2004, the second generation Toyota Avalons started rolling off the streets. It grew in almost every aspect possible. The size then became similar to the Toyota Camry. As per the third generation Toyota Avalons, it started from 2005 up until the present. It is a complete redesign from before, and has become Toyota’s largest, most luxurious, and most expensive model to date.

It has been crafted and intended to compete with the Chevrolet Impala, Ford Five Hundred, and the Chrysler 300. The first vehicle for this generation was introduced at the 2005 North American International Auto Show. Touring models and a keyless remote start is quite standard for the Toyota Avalon Limited models.

Good qualities that this new generation has are that the vehicles are very well refined and are well wrought. Also, it is not known to quake or rattle with brakes and handling that are adequate and very safe. It also bears with it the Toyota standard and reputation for its switches and controls. As per its interior, it is quite cavernous and very modern, without the fear of being avant-garde. When it comes to the Toyota Avalon’s power, it is ample and smooth.

Of all of the hundreds of vehicles on display at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, one of the most intriguing to me was the compressed natural gas powered Toyota Camry Hybrid concept. Toyota, which had a press conference for their luxury Lexus brand during the press days which I attended (but not for Toyota or Scion) still managed to display the hybrid Camry, a car not like any other one at the show.

But, the concept Camry could one day prove to be a very popular model if certain energy initiatives come to pass. Please read on to learn about the natural gas powered Camry and how this car could revolutionize the way that we drive.

Toyota is a leader when it comes to hybrid technology, producing the gas-electric Prius and other models including the Camry. But, a natural gas-electric hybrid Camry is a new idea, one that hasn't been considered for production until now.

According to Toyota, compressed natural gas produces lower particulate emissions, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and non-methane organic gases and less CO2 per unit of energy when compared to gasoline. It can also run at higher compression ratio and is quickly dispersed into the atmosphere should a leak occur.

Best of all, natural gas is one resource in abundant supply in the US and costs as much as 40% less than gasoline. So, why aren't natural gas cars being produced?

That's easy: the infrastructure for natural gas is currently not in place, with fewer than 1000 refueling stations nationwide. Under half of those stations aren't open to the public, making refueling difficult if not impossible in some areas of the country.

If the federal government commits to expanding our natural gas infrastructure then the chances of the Toyota CNG hybrid going into production improves. This is something the next Administration will want to tackle as natural gas burns cleaner and reduces our dependency on foreign sources of oil, especially oil purchased from countries who are openly hostile to our way of life.

The displayed Camry concept is powered by the standard 2.4L, 4-cylinder engine found in base model Camry's today. With Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, the gasoline fuel system is replaced with a compressed natural gas system, the main difference between the two hybrid Camry models.

This particular vehicle is mainly a good hybrid marketed in and to the U.S. Consumers. How to Keep Your Rear Tires From Wearing on the Edges .

We are the proud owners of a 2003 Toyota Matrix XR. For the most part it has been a really good car except for the way it wears out the edges of the rear tires. I have taken it to several tire shops and they all seen to say that either the problem is with the shock absorbers or it needs a rear wheel alignment. Most tire dealers also mentioned that after you have the rear wheels aligned the car may pull to one side of the road all of the time. Since the car doesn't pull at all now I decided not to do the alignment.

One other important thing to look out for is when you have the tires replaced pay attention to the direction of rotation stamped on the side of many tire brands that fit that car. The tire shop installed two new tires on the car and never paid attention to the direction of rotation and I never thought to look at it. I just let them do their job and install the tires. Well, around two thousand miles after the tires were installed the grinding noise started in the rear of the car again.

I checked the tires and sure enough the tire with the rotation backwards was wearing rapidly on the inside. I contacted the tire shop and they told me that they wouldn't make a mistake like that and besides the rotation makes no difference in the tires performance. I wasn't sure what to believe. If it didn't make any difference why put a direction of rotation on the tire in the first place.

I found out that to keep the tires from wearing out on the edges you have to keep a close eye on the tread wear every thousand miles. Once you see that the outside edges of the tire are colored differently that means that the surface of the tires are not contacting the road surface evenly and the tread is beginning to wear in the lighter colored areas. This usually happens at two thousand miles.

Even though the owner's manual recommends rotating the tires every three thousand miles that is too late. The tires will have cupped by then. It has been working great for us during the past year to rotate the tires every two thousand miles. If you are already having the problem because your tires are cupped out you may be able to save them by reversing the direction of their rotation.

You will, for example, have to have your tire shop swap the tire from the left side and put it on the right side rim and do the same with the other tire. If the tire is too bad though it will have to be replaced. Once you have the tires reversed or replaced then rotate them every two thousand miles.
